The Marianist charism in the face of the digital revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the world of our founders and our present digital revolution, more than two centuries have passed. William-Joseph Chaminade and Adele de Batz experienced the consequences of the French Revolution; we inhabit a culture shaped by artificial intelligence, social networks, and technological acceleration. And yet, when reading the encyclical <em>Magnifica Humanitas<\/em> by Pope Leo XIV, it is striking to discover how much it resonates with the foundational Marianist intuition.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope describes our time as a decisive moment for humanity. He warns of the risk of building a society that is technically very powerful, yet increasingly fragile in human terms: people who are connected, but lonely; efficient systems, but incapable of compassion; intelligent technologies, but ever more superficial relationships. In response, Leo XIV insists on something essential: the future will not be saved by technical innovation alone, but by learning once again to care for relationships, fraternity, and the human heart.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marianist charism has much to contribute here.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Father Chaminade would immediately recognize the challenge. He too lived through a \u201cchange of era.\u201d After the French Revolution, he found a fragmented society and a weakened faith. And he understood that the response could not be fear or nostalgia, but rather the formation of living communities that would rebuild the human and Christian fabric from within. That is why he dreamed of forming disciples and communities capable of generating new Christian life: people able to live the faith in community, support one another, and be a presence of hope in the midst of the world.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mother Adele completed this intuition with a deeply evangelical spirit: spiritual friendship, closeness, and concrete care for people. Her letters reveal an extraordinary ability to create genuine bonds. In a time of uncertainty, Adele knew how to build a spiritual family. And perhaps today, in the midst of a digital culture where so many relationships risk becoming fast, functional, or impersonal, her witness is especially relevant.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo XIV insists that no technology can replace the value of an authentic human relationship. And Mother Adele would probably respond with what she lived throughout her life: that people grow when they know they are loved, listened to, and accompanied. Her \u201cgift of friendship\u201d was not something secondary; it was a concrete way of evangelizing and of revealing God\u2019s close and caring face.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also another point where the encyclical and the Marianist charism closely converge: Eucharistic spirituality.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pope states that, in a culture marked by dispersion, speed, and virtuality, humanity needs to return to a spirituality capable of reconciling and making true communion present. He proposes the Eucharist precisely as a school of humanity. There, we learn that life is not built on self-sufficiency, but on gift; not on performance, but on self-giving.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mother Adele had a profoundly living relationship with Jesus in the Eucharist. In her letters, she invites others to \u201cgo often to draw grace from the divine Eucharist\u201d and to allow Christ to transform the heart (cf. 313.4). For her, the Eucharist is the source of a new way of living, loving, and serving. From it also flowed her ability to care for each sister, to sustain communities, and to keep hope alive even in illness and fragility.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps this is what our founders would discover today in <em>Magnifica Humanitas<\/em>: that the great challenge is not only technological, but fundamentally spiritual. What will be decisive is not how far artificial intelligence advances, but how much our capacity for communion grows. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps they would also help us discover something important when reading the encyclical: that the Christian response is never to flee from the world, but rather <em>not to fear getting our hands dirty in the work of our time<\/em> (MH no. 16). Chaminade and Adele did not withdraw in the face of the crises of their time. They founded communities, educated, accompanied young people, cared for friendships, sustained the faith of ordinary people, and placed Mary at the center as a model of a humanity fully open to God.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the Marianist charism continues to respond in the same way to the call of Pope Leo XIV: by creating communities where people can once again feel welcomed; by educating for interiority and discernment; by nurturing human relationships in an accelerated world; and by reminding us, from the Eucharist and the spirit of family, that no machine can ever replace the transformative power of a truly human heart. This humanity in its grandeur, in the words of Leo XIV, bears the face of Mary: a humble humanity capable of recognizing God\u2019s action in history and of weaving hope amid the transformations of our time. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Between the world of our founders and our present digital revolution, more than two centuries have passed.
